Exponential Moving Average Basics
An exponential moving average (EMA) is a type of moving average that gives more weight to recent price data than older data. Unlike a simple moving average (SMA) that weights all periods equally, the EMA responds faster to recent price changes. This makes it more useful for detecting momentum shifts in systematic frameworks where signal timeliness matters.
The two EMAs most commonly used in systematic frameworks for momentum detection are the 7-period EMA (very responsive to recent price action) and the 21-period EMA (a smoother medium-term trend indicator). The relationship between these two โ specifically, whether the 7 is above or below the 21, and how rapidly they are converging or diverging โ is the basis for momentum-based signal generation.
What a Crossover Signals
When the faster EMA (7) crosses above the slower EMA (21), it indicates that recent price action is accelerating upward faster than the medium-term average โ a bullish momentum signal. When the 7 crosses below the 21, recent price action is accelerating downward โ a bearish momentum signal.
The crossover itself is not the entry point in sophisticated systematic frameworks. The crossover is a regime-change signal โ it tells the engine that momentum has shifted. The entry signal requires additional confirmation: volume expansion, structure alignment on a higher timeframe, and a minimum conviction score.
EMA Converging Watch โ The Pre-Signal Alert
Before a crossover occurs, the two EMAs converge โ the gap between them narrows as momentum shifts. The V23 EMA Converging Watch (Rule 30 in the ZHC engine) detects this convergence and fires a pre-signal alert when the 7 and 21 are within a defined threshold on the 1H timeframe. This gives subscribers educational context that a momentum shift may be developing โ not that the trade is confirmed.
The Converging Watch alert specifically states that it is a monitoring condition, not an entry signal. It is designed to help traders focus attention on an asset before the crossover fires, so they are not caught off-guard when the actual DEGEN signal arrives.
