The Hierarchy of Timeframes
In systematic trading frameworks, timeframes have a strict hierarchy: higher timeframes govern lower timeframes. The daily chart structure sets the context for the 4H chart. The 4H chart structure sets the context for the 1H chart. The 1H sets the context for the 30m and 15m. A signal on a 15m chart that conflicts with the 4H structure is a lower-quality signal than one that aligns with it โ because the higher timeframe reflects more capital and more deliberate positioning.
This hierarchy is enforced in V23's ZHC conviction model through the HTF Alignment scoring category. A LONG signal on the 1H is scored positively for HTF alignment if price is above the 4H 21 EMA and the 4H structure shows higher highs and higher lows. If the 4H structure is bearish โ lower highs, lower lows, price below key EMAs โ the HTF alignment score is zero or negative, which reduces the overall conviction score and may block the signal entirely.
Top-Down Analysis Process
The systematic top-down process for a signal: first, assess the weekly regime (BTC macro score, weekly EMA positioning). Second, assess the daily structure (trend direction, key levels, recent swing highs/lows). Third, assess the 4H structure (EMA alignment, recent consolidation or impulse). Fourth, assess the signal timeframe (1H, 30m, or 15m) for the specific entry condition. Only when higher timeframes align does the lower-timeframe signal receive a high conviction score.
When Lower Timeframes Lead Higher
The top-down hierarchy has a counterpoint: lower timeframe signals often precede higher timeframe structural changes. A 15m DEGEN signal during what appears to be a 4H bearish structure can be the first evidence that the 4H structure is reversing. Systematic frameworks handle this by assigning lower conviction scores to counter-trend lower-timeframe signals โ acknowledging that they exist but requiring more evidence before routing them to paid channels.
